In addition, teeing it high and playing it forward helps them to hit the ball on the "hot spot" (above the "sweet spot") of the new-technology metal woods. Hitting on the "hot spot" also maximizes distance. However, setting up with the ball opposite your forward heel is still a good rule of thumb for the average player. Tour pros start the downswing with a more-accentuated weight transfer to their forward foot than do most golfers, and once they arrive on their front side their hips rotate very quickly. These actions match with playing the ball forward, a position that would be detrimental to the vast majority of amateurs whose lower bodies don't move correctly.

The term "face angle" refers to the direction of the club
face when the golf club is placed in its normal playing
position, i.e., how the club comes to rest on the ground
when the player assumes the address position. Typically,
face angles are described as "square" (looking at the target),
"closed" (looking to the left of the target for a right-
handed player) or "open" (looking to the right of the target
for a right-hander). However, when I fit golfers for metal
woods, I find they often misperceive the face angle at
address. This misperception is a product of the rapid changes
in technology. Before woods were made of metal (they actually
were wood) and before the advent of huge metal woods (over
300 cc), the center of gravity of these clubs was near the
front of the face, close to the shaft. Since a club head
tends to rotate around its center of gravity, manufacturers
built clubs with varying degrees of open face angles to
prevent the face from closing too quickly through impact.
Thus the standard club face, which was actually open at
address, was termed square by golfers. Now that the center
of gravity has changed on metal heads, the face angles
required to square the club at impact have also changed --
to square or even a bit closed. These angles look terrible
to many long-time players, so they do one of two things:
(1) they don't put big metal woods in their bag, or (2) they
manipulate the club face open so it looks square. Either way
they are doing themselves a disservice by not taking advantage
of the latest technology. My advice: Get used to it. Once you
get by the closed look of the club face at address and allow
it sit on the ground the way it was designed, you can boom
them out there farther and more accurately than you ever have.

My 8-year-old daughter started a junior golf clinic
recently and she tells me that her instructors emphasize
what she calls "the three stations of the swing" --
address, top of the backswing and finish. Her swing looks
pretty good, but I have never heard of this approach. Can
you tell me more about it?

A: Most good golfers know where the club head is at all
times during their swings. This so-called "club head
awareness" is an ability that gives you great rewards in
terms of consistency. When the club head is stopped it's
easy to be aware of where it is. The three stations your
daughter describes are the three times the club head is
stopped during the swing (albeit for a very short time
at the top of the backswing as it changes from motion
in one direction to motion in the opposite direction).
This three-station approach is good for adults as well
as children because these "stopped positions" are the
easiest to observe, adjust and refine. Also, children
are great mimics. If the instructors demonstrate these
three stations correctly (and apparently they have
because your daughter's swing looks "pretty good"), the
children will find it is easy to swing to and from each
station.

An incident I witnessed recently reminded me that it's time
for my periodic rail against the worst advice in golf: "Keep
your head down." Two young fellows arrived on the driving
range and started hitting. It was apparent that one had play-
ed for some time and the other was new to the game. The be-
ginner took the driver and made a beautiful, athletic swing,
but missed it completely. He then made another move at the
ball and hit it about 260 yards down the middle with a slight
hook. His third attempt was another "almost-right" whiff, so
his friend decided it was time to help him. You guessed it --
the friend told the beginner to keep his head down, and pro-
ceeded to demonstrate by hitting three 180-yard slices. No
slouch as a learner, the beginner then copied him perfectly.
He kept his head stock still and hit a weak slice that
started left then cut back into the middle of the range
about 180 yards out. "There, now you have it," his mentor
said, although it would have been more accurate to say,
"There, now you've HAD it." The new player hit the rest of
his bucket, never again duplicating the 260-yard bomb --
another budding golf career nipped in the bud by bad advice.
The moral of this sad story: To preserve the athleticism of
your swing, let your head participate as your body rotates;
it swivels as you do.

The takeaway sets the tone for everything that follows in
the golf swing, and a mistake made here can set off a chain
of errors from which it is hard to recover. A common take-
away error called "fanning" occurs when your trail hand and
forearm roll, causing the club face to open at the top of
the backswing. In an attempt to square the club face at
impact, a recovery motion is the order of the day, but it's
hard to time it correctly. If you over-recover, you'll close
the club face, resulting in a pull hook. And if you under-
recover, the club face remains "open" at impact (looking to
the right of the target), resulting in a weak slice.

7-handicap get better

Got this in a an email:

Q: I'm a 7-handicap but can't seem to get better. I have a
strong grip, and I have even seen on video that I regrip
as I start back (I'm not conscious of it) and make the grip
even stronger. I hook everything -- even with an 8-iron to
the green I have to start the ball over the right side
bunker. I've tried to neutralize my grip, but can't seem to
do it. My pro keeps a 7-iron with a molded training grip on
it, and I can hit the ball dead straight with it. However,
when I switch back to my own club I can't keep my hands in
the right place. My father says I need a psychiatrist. Do
you have any suggestions?

A: In this case, "father knows worst." You don't need a
shrink, just a little information. First, be aware of why
the molded training handle works. Assuming you are a right-
handed player, the grip guide places the first joint of
your right index finger on the right side of the shaft.
Pressure from this joint keeps the club face square to the
intended line of flight. A strong grip places that joint
under the shaft, causing the club face to rotate excessively
and producing a hook. So check to make sure the first joint
of your right index finger is placed properly when using
your own club. Players often believe that they are placing
their hands in the same way as they did on the training
handle but miss the correct index finger placement. As far
as the regripping is concerned, you're probably uncovering
your left thumb as you start back. To keep it covered,
apply pressure with the heel pad of your right thumb
against the big joint of your left thumb. I give many of my
students a molded training handle (the handle alone) and
tell them to get used to the feel. I find that using it
while watching TV works well. The more you use it, the more
comfortable the proper grip will feel on a regulation
handle.

Natalie Gulbis assumed she'd be signing copies of her new calendar at the U.S. Women's Open. The U.S. Golf Association assumed the Gulbis calendars it ordered for its merchandise tent would be about golf. Both parties were reminded of what can happen when you assume. After seeing the 16-month calendar's pictures of the 21-year-old LPGA Tour standout -- including several bathing-suit shots -- the USGA decided it was not appropriate fare for its merchandise tent and canceled a scheduled Gulbis signing session. USGA spokesman Marty Parkes said the initial decision to stock the Gulbis calendars was made by Anne McCarthy, merchandise director of the Women's Open, whom Gulbis' agent contacted. "She was told it was a golf calendar," Parkes said. When McCarthy saw the contents of the calendar, which also includes photos of Gulbis in golf and exercise attire, she pulled the plug, Parkes said. "Basically, it was a case of the subject matter being inappropriate to the event," said Parkes, noting that the USGA aims a lot of its marketing at children. The calendar is the second one for Gulbis, who did her first one last year. She said she got the idea after Sports Illustrated started including pictures of female athletes in its annual swimsuit issue. "The fans have liked it, and there aren't really a lot of calendars that sports fans can buy of female athletes," she said. Although not officially on sale on the grounds, the calendar was a hot item at the Open. Gulbis said she had seen several in circulation, but didn't know what became of the 100 the USGA ordered. "I wish they were selling it here, because so many people have been asking me about them," Gulbis said. "A couple of USGA officials have come up to me and asked me for them."

If she secures a spot, it's a tournament that sends its winner to the Masters. the Curtis Cup matches in Merseyside, England, June 12-13, then will defend her title June 22-27 at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links in Williamsburg, Va. the most common faults I seen the average golfer make is
that they don't know how to set up correctly.

A lot of players think they have to aim their body at the
target and forget where their club face and feet are
pointing.

The best thing to think of for a correct set up is to
picture yourself standing on the nearest track of a rail-
way line to hit a golf ball sitting on the other track.

Your feet, hips and shoulders don't aim at the target
they aim parallel but to the left of the target. The
only thing that aims at the target is your club face on
the other line.

Such a set-up encourages swinging the club face through
the ball along - rather than across - the target line.

"When it's breezy swing easy."

How many golfers have heard this old stand by? Let's get
into just a little bit more detail about this. What will
swinging easy do for you when the wind is up?

For one thing it increases the chances of solid contact
creating a more penetrating ball flight. (Swinging harder
in an attempt to fight the wind makes it more likely you'll
make poor contact for various reasons: contracting the wrong
muscles in the wrong sequence, losing your center of balance,
increased grip tension, the list goes on...)

For another thing it compresses the ball less causing it to
spin less, which also creates a more penetrating ball flight.
Notice the theme. A solidly struck ball with a more penetrat-
ing trajectory is less affected by the wind. Swinging harder
when the wind is blowing is a powerful instinct to overcome.
But if you can discipline yourself to use more club and
swing easier (like all the textbooks and great players and
teachers have been recommending forever) it will have a
wonderful effect on your ability to control the ball in the
wind.

learned by reading and observation. I especially enjoyed
your book "The 30-Second Golf Swing"; it helped me a great
deal. However, in developing the "strength and weakness
profile" that you suggest, I discovered a flaw in my game;
my pitching, compared to the rest of my game, is weak
(about like a 5- or 6-handicap) and is keeping me from
scoring better. Can you suggest a book on pitching and/or

A: Often, pitching seems to be the last shot good golfers
take seriously. My book "Play Better Golf" has a lot of
material on it and will help. But in the meantime, here
are a few "rules" that you requested:

1. Use a narrow stance and play the ball back. Start, swing
and finish with your weight on your forward foot.

2. Pitching should be done with "dead" hands. They should be
used only to cock the wrists on the backswing. There should
be no independent effort to hit the ball with your hands.

3. Begin your wrist cock as soon as you take the club away
from the ball. The wrist cock should be gradual and
completed by the end of your back swing (differing lengths
for different length shots).

4. On the downswing, keep everything synchronized. Rotate
your body to produce the stability necessary for an
efficient, repeating, pitching motion. Remember, you are
rotating around your front hip socket, employing no
independent force from your hands and arms.

match your golf ball to your clubs. The best way to find the
right ball is to visit a fitting center, such as the Callaway
Fitting Center we have at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield, Conn.
There are similar centers around the country that use computer
technology to take all the variables into consideration. For
example, if you're looking for distance off the driver,
utilizing a launch monitor at a fitting center to measure the
spin rate and launch angle of your shots can determine which
ball is best. A monitor can find the ideal spin rate (between
2,500 and 3,000 rpms) and the ideal launch angle (between 11
and 13 degrees). If you don't have access to a launch monitor,
but you're concerned about getting more distance, look for a
ball that reaches its apex (highest point) early in its flight
then levels out. This type of flight gives you more carry and
therefore added distance. What you don't want is a ball that
starts low and shoots up like a jet airplane taking off. This
indicates too much spin, the result of which is shorter shots
and the tendency to hook or slice. Distance with the driver
is only one factor to take into account. How the ball reacts
off short irons and around the greens is also important.
Experiment with balls of varying constructions because there
is a ball that will optimize your distance and control given

Indeed, there's nothing to keep Duval from waiting until
summer, if that's what it takes. It all depends on his con-
fidence and progress. "There's no real rush," Leadbetter
said Wednesday from Orlando. "It's not do-or-die that it
has to be TPC or Augusta. It's going to be when he feels
his game and his head are ready for it." The only apparent
sure thing is that Duval, 32, who made only four cuts in
20 events last year and fell to 242nd in the world rankings,
is getting married during the first week of March to Susie
Persichitte, an interior designer from Denver he met last
summer at The International. While Leadbetter is encouraged
that Duval has started to fade the ball again, he's concern-
ed about the timing of Duval's return. If Duval eventually
eyes TPC, it might be smarter to start back at, say, either
the Honda Classic or Bay Hill, rather than face the pressure
of a debut at Ponte Vedra Beach in his hometown tournament.

Women Need Equipment Tailored To Their Game

One of the most upsetting statistics in golf is that one out
of every two women who take up the game quit after 24 months.
There are a number of reasons for this, but one of the most
common is that the game is made hard for women because many
of them play with inferior equipment. Sometimes it is the
arrow and not the Indian that's responsible for a bad shot.
Many women players have difficulty generating enough club
head speed to consistently get the ball airborne with the
longer clubs, which have less face loft. They have no trouble
with the 5-iron through pitching wedge, but they hit the rest
of their clubs all about the same distance. This begs a ques-
tion from an inquiring mind: "Why do I need all those other
clubs in the set if they all go the same distance?" I've
asked club manufacturers about this, but they have always
responded with a shrug -- until now. Finally, using the
information provided by modern-day launch monitors, club
manufacturers such as Callaway are making sets available
this year that are more suitable for golfers with slow swing
speed. Here's how it works. A woman who hits her driver about
120 yards spins the ball at about 4,000 rpms (revolutions per
minute). Her spin rate for the pitching wedge is about 5,000
rpms. The rate is fairly constant throughout the set, meaning
she has only a 40-yard gap between her longest and shortest
clubs (by contrast, the average man hits his pitching wedge
100 yards and his driver 220 yards -- a 120-yard gap). The
strategy for these women is to have fewer clubs (more woods
and fewer irons) and to space the lofts far differently than
the spacing in a traditional set. For example, a woman's set
of clubs would include: a 14-degree driver, 18-degree 3-wood,
20-degree 5-wood, 24-degree 7-wood, 28-degree 9-wood, 32-
degree 7-iron, 38-degree 8-iron, 44-degree 9-iron and a 50-
degree pitching wedge. Throw in a sand wedge and a putter
and you have a set that numbers 11, but fills in the 40-yard
gap more evenly (and with more versatility).

Q: Recognizing that there have been significant advances in the technologies of equipment, are there PGA courses which have not significantly changed in the past 10 years where the scoring averages have remained fairly constant?

Answer: TPC at Sawgrass comes immediately to mind. Very few changes have been made to this layout and generally players give the host venue for The Players championship high marks because it gives players of all different abilities the chance to win.

Oh, Greg Norman got PGA Tour officials all flustered in 1994 when he shot 24-under to win The Players Championship, but they didn't push the panic button and call out the bulldozers; they merely tightened the fairways and made a concerted effort to get the fairways and greens as firm as possible. The result? Lee Janzen won with a score of 283 in 1995 and in two other years when conditions were extremely difficult, David Duval (3-under in 1999) and Craig Perks (8-under in 2002) also prevailed with higher than normal totals, but for the most part, the average winning score has been 13-under. Adam Scott went 12-under to win this year's event, so I like the course for how it has remained consistently strong in the face of technological advances.

Pebble Beach (AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am) several years ago changed dramatically the par-3 fifth hole, but it remains pretty much the same course it's always been, one that relies upon Mother Nature to supply defense. Westchester Country Club (Buick Classic) has made cosmetic changes, but is basically the same gem it has been for years.

Grips Are Not All Created Equal

It's not unusual for a student to tell me, "I had new grips
put on my clubs, and they just don't feel right anymore."
The problem often turns out to be that the new grips don't
weigh the same as the old ones. When this happens, it can
significantly change the swing-weight of the clubs, and that
makes them feel very different indeed. Here's why. "Swing-
weight" refers to the relationship between the length of a
club and the weight in its club head. The weight of the grip
counterbalances the weight in the head, so replacing a grip
with one of a different weight changes the weight distribu-
tion and therefore the feel. Suppose I substitute a standard
51-gram grip with one of the same diameter that weighs only
42 grams on a driver that measures D3 (men's medium) on the
swing-weight scale. This makes the club head effectively
heavier as a percentage of the overall weight, raising the
swing-weight to about D6 -- a significant change. Conversely,
changing to a heavier grip will make a club feel lighter.
Grips of the same diameter come in many different weights,
from 51 grams all the way down to 35 grams. Be sure your
club repair man uses grips that allow you to retain the

drop-off in Tiger Woods' major victories and general
success during the past two years seldom assume it's be-
cause nobody can play great every week or other players
have closed the gap on him. Many observers think it's
largely because Woods, who tied for 46th last week at Bay
Hill for his worst finish in five years, and instructor
Butch Harmon ended their professional relationship in late
2002. Since then, Woods either self-evaluates his swing or
occasionally employs an extra set of eyes from his friend,
Mark O'Meara. Woods said Tuesday that while he always is
grateful for what Harmon did to remold his swing in the
late 1990s, their collaboration was limited in recent years.
"I really didn't work a whole lot [with Butch] the last two
or three years," Woods said. "It wasn't a lot we were work-
ing on. Our biggest task was basically from '97 through '98,
when I changed my swing from an across-the-line kind of shot,
[with a] stronger grip to where it is now. ... After that,
it was basically kind of maintenance here and there." Woods
said the two men often talk when Harmon is out on tour work-
ing with Darren Clarke or Stewart Cink. And Woods said
Harmon "has meant a lot to me as a person." But they aren't
working together. "Butch and I are still friends," Woods
said, "and Butch will always be my friend. ... [But] as far

A: "Keep your head down" is terrible advice because it
stifles motion through the hitting area. Staring at the
ground -- or in your case, a big divot -- after impact is
not good for either your score or your back. The harder
you try not to move your head, the more your body "freezes
up" until you're reduced to flailing at the ball with only
your hands and arms. Your goal should be to see the ball in
the air as quickly as possible after you hit it. Some very
good players (Annika Sorenstam, for one) actually take their
eyes off the ball before impact (it is called "looking off
the ball"). It's an important part of an aggressive rotation
through the shot. Teaching pro Brady Riggs outlines a good
drill for correct head rotation in the April issue of Golf
Tips magazine. "Place a second ball about 2 feet in front of
the actual ball at address and slightly inside the target
line," writes Riggs. "While hitting off a tee, look at the
second ball during impact."

The perfect wedge

During an average round of golf, 65 percent of a player's
shots are taken within 100 yards of the hole, so wedge play
is a critical element of the game. To be a good wedge player,
you should know how to match the bounce on your wedges to
your swing and to the course conditions (grass and sand).

Bounce is the angle represented by a line drawn from the
bottom (sole)of a wedge to the leading edge.

The rule of thumb is that players who come into the ball
from a steep angle do better with clubs that have more
bounce because it prevents the clubhead from digging into
the ground. Players who sweep the ball using a shallow
angle of attack need less bounce to avoid skidding along
the ground and contacting the ball in the middle -- the
dreaded "skull" shot that goes screeching over the green.

Your divots will tell you what type of wedges you need.
If your divots are generally long and deep, use wedges
with lots of bounce; if your divots are thin and short,
use wedges with little bounce.

The conditions of the course are also important. If the
ground and sand are soft, you need wedges with lots of
bounce to avoid digging too deeply. If the ground and
sand are firm, you need just the opposite -- a club with
less bounce for a more solid hit.

Of course, different courses present different conditions,
so be prepared to change wedges depending on where you are
playing.

For example, at this year's Sony Open in Hawaii, 14-year-
old sensation Michelle Wie said that the PGA Tour field
staff made the sand more "fluffy" than she was used to.
Such a condition should dictate the use of a sand wedge
with more bounce.

A: Stronomic is a lightweight synthetic polymer. The name
was made up by Odyssey. It feels good at contact because
the insert is much softer, especially if you play with a
hard-feeling, two-piece/solid-core "distance" ball.
Odyssey was founded by an engineer named Brian Pond, who
revolutionized putters with his insert innovation. Today,
we find putters with inserts made from all sorts of polymer
recipes, as well as lightweight metals and metal alloys
such as aluminum and beryllium copper. These lightweight
inserts allow the weight that was saved to be moved to the
perimeter of the club face. This acts to stabilize the
putter at contact and effectively increase the size of the
"sweet spot." Incidentally, Odyssey was sold to Callaway
Golf in 1997.

FINDING THE RIGHT 'BOUNCE' KEY TO OPTIMAL WEDGE PLAY

During an average round of golf, 65 percent of a player's
shots are taken within 100 yards of the hole, so wedge play
is a critical element of the game. To be a good wedge player,
you should know how to match the bounce on your wedges to
your swing and to the course conditions (grass and sand).
Bounce is the angle represented by a line drawn from the
bottom (sole) of a wedge to the leading edge. The rule of
thumb is that players who come into the ball from a steep
angle do better with clubs that have more bounce because it
prevents the club head from digging into the ground. Players
who sweep the ball using a shallow angle of attack need less
bounce to avoid skidding along the ground and contacting the
ball in the middle -- the dreaded "skull" shot that goes
screeching over the green. Your divots will tell you what
type of wedges you need. If your divots are generally long
and deep, use wedges with lots of bounce; if your divots are
thin and short, use wedges with little bounce. The conditions
of the course are also important. If the ground and sand are
soft, you need wedges with lots of bounce to avoid digging
too deeply. If the ground and sand are firm, you need just
the opposite -- a club with less bounce for a more solid hit.
Of course, different courses present different conditions,
so be prepared to change wedges depending on where you are
playing. For example, at this year's Sony Open in Hawaii,
'14-year-old sensation Michelle Wie said that the PGA Tour
field staff made the sand more "fluffy" than she was used
to. Such a condition should dictate the use of a sand wedge
with more bounce. Ask your professional which wedges are

A male and a female golfer who met on the course eventually got married. On their honeymoon night (at a golf resort, of course) they proceeded to consummate their marriage. After the first episode (which made the earth move) the man picked up the phone and started dialing.

His wife asked, "Who are you calling?"

He replied, "Room Service. I want some champagne."

She said, "Jack Nicklaus wouldn't do that. He would make love to me again!"

So, they embarked on another episode. The second time was even better. He picked up the phone after their sex and

For some, this is the scariest place on the golf course.
Between the term "trap," and what can actually happen to
your ball there, it can be a little frightening. Sand
traps have the ability to intimidate even the most
skilled players every now and then. They vary in size,
depth, sand consistency, and difficulty. Typically found
near greens to gobble up errant approach shots, they're
sometimes found lining, or in the fairways where a per-
fect drive would land. Playing confident shots from the
sand will take time and practice.

Names carry a power with them, which is why scary people
want scary names: "Bone Crusher" Smith, Tommy "Hit Man"
Herns, "Machine Gun" Kelly and Johnny "Knee Breaker"
Sarduchi. When you hear their names you know that if
you're not careful, you're done before you start against
these guys.

It's the same in golf. There's "The King," "The Bear,"
"The Shark" and, of course, "Tiger." Now I realize there
isn't much his opponents can do against him, but here's
a suggestion: Call him Eldrick (Tiger's real name), as
in, "Eldrick and I tee off at 11:30," or "Eldrick, I
believe you're away." It's not much of a strategy, but
nothing else worked this year.

Grips Are Not All Created Equal

It's not unusual for a student to tell me, "I had new grips
put on my clubs, and they just don't feel right anymore."
The problem often turns out to be that the new grips don't
weigh the same as the old ones. When this happens, it can
significantly change the swing-weight of the clubs, and that
makes them feel very different indeed. Here's why. "Swing-
weight" refers to the relationship between the length of a
club and the weight in its club head. The weight of the grip
counterbalances the weight in the head, so replacing a grip
with one of a different weight changes the weight distribu-
tion and therefore the feel. Suppose I substitute a standard
51-gram grip with one of the same diameter that weighs only
42 grams on a driver that measures D3 (men's medium) on the
swing-weight scale. This makes the club head effectively
heavier as a percentage of the overall weight, raising the
swing-weight to about D6 -- a significant change. Conversely,
changing to a heavier grip will make a club feel lighter.
Grips of the same diameter come in many different weights,
from 51 grams all the way down to 35 grams. Be sure your
club repair man uses grips that allow you to retain the

"It's certainly not a ship", he thinks to himself.

As the speck gets closer and closer he begins to rule out the possibilities of a small boat, then even a raft. Suddenly, emerging from the surf, comes a drop dead gorgeous blonde woman wearing a wet suit and scuba gear. She approaches the stunned guy and says to him, "Tell me, how long has it been since you've had a cigarette?"

"Ten years," replies the stunned man.

With that she reaches over and unzips a waterproof pocket on her left sleeve and pulls out a pack of cigarettes. He takes one, lights it, takes a long drag and says, "Man, oh man! Is that good!!"

"And how long has it been since you've had a sip of bourbon?" she asks him.

Trembling the castaway replies, "Ten years."

She reaches over, unzips her right sleeve, pulls out a flask and hands it to him.

He opens the flask, takes a long swig and says, "WOW, that's absolutely fantastic!"

At this point she starts slowly unzipping the long zipper that runs down the front of her wet suit, looks at the man seductively and asks, "And how long has it been since you've played around?"

With tears in his eyes, the guy falls to his knees and sobs, "Oh good Lord! Don't tell me you've got golf clubs in there too?"
